Chennai: There is reported disagreement inside Naam Tamilar Katchi over whether to contest the Madurantakam and Tharapuram by-elections.
The leadership is said to be firm about fielding candidates, while senior functionaries worry that another defeat would discourage organisers and cadre.
The by-elections have been announced for 6 October. The DMK has already named candidates and started work. TVK has also named candidates. NTK has made no official announcement.
In the last Assembly election the party did not get the votes it expected in either seat. Some inside the party are said to be discussing a boycott, or support for the AIADMK, instead of contesting.
Others say a by-election needs money, people, and ground work the party would struggle to spare. At the same time, the leadership is reported to have told functionaries to be ready to fight. Whether NTK enters the field is now an open question.
