Chennai: BJP state president Nainar Nagendran has urged the Tamil Nadu government to allow toddy to be tapped and sold.
The inquiry commission headed by retired justice P. Gokuldas, looking into the Kallakurichi hooch deaths, recommended that the government consider licensing the tapping and sale of toddy, a natural drink.
Welcoming that, Nagendran said permission under proper rules would improve farmers’ livelihoods and help the rural economy. A legal route for natural toddy, he said, would also prevent deaths caused by hooch mixed with chemicals.
He has asked Chief Minister Vijay not to leave the recommendation as a report, and to allow tapping and marketing without delay, with safety rules. He said the permission would be useful for raising farm incomes and strengthening the rural economy.
