Vellore: Police have arrested a husband and wife in the theft of 36 sovereigns of gold from the home of a retired government-school teacher near Katpadi. They seized 26 sovereigns and a car bought with the proceeds.

Rajkumar and Maria, of Christianpet near Katpadi, had gone to Arcot on 27 August to see a church priest who was unwell. They returned at night to find the front door and a bureau broken open.

Chains, a necklace, bangles, earrings, and other gold — 36 sovereigns in all — were gone. Katpadi police registered a case.

A special team reviewed local CCTV and saw a young man and a woman board a bus to Chittoor. With help from Chittoor police they found the pair in a rented house, surrounded it, and brought them back to Katpadi.

They were identified as Muthuvel Karthik, 32, and Prabhavathi, 30, of Virudhunagar, who had married for love. Police said the couple stayed in rented houses in other towns, watched homes together, and sold what they stole to live lavishly. They may have worked in Chittoor as well as Katpadi.

Both were produced in court and remanded.
