Chennai: Railway police have arrested two women for stealing a 3-sovereign gold chain from an older woman as she boarded a train at Chennai Central, using the crowd.
Pappathi, 61, of Modakurichi in Erode district, boarded an intercity train for Erode at Central on 4 September. The chain around her neck was gone. She complained at the Central railway police station.
Officers reviewed station cameras and said two women had taken the chain in the boarding crush. They arrested Bharathi, 70, and Pooja, 28, both from Karnataka.
Questioning is continuing, including whether the pair has taken jewellery from passengers at other stations or on other trains. Railway police have asked travellers to keep belongings and jewellery secure where crowds are used as cover.
