Chennai: The scholarship of Bharathidasan, a Tamil Nadu student pursuing doctoral research in Malaysia, has become a political argument.
Studying under the Ambedkar overseas higher-education scholarship, he posted a video saying the money needed for his second year of research had not arrived and that his studies were at risk.
DMK leader M.K. Stalin, DMK MP Kanimozhi, and others spoke in his support. They said his education should not suffer and that the government should release the funds it had promised.
The government’s account
The social justice department said a substantial sum had already been paid for his studies, and that a recommendation from the university was still required for the extra funds he had asked for toward second-year research costs.
The department also said the details in the student’s video did not match its records.
“The money will be released in two days”
Social justice minister Vanni Arasu has said the assistance needed for Bharathidasan to continue his research will be given, and that the pending amount will be released within two days.
The dispute has now turned on that release.
